Despite this, Sati insisted on attending the yajna. When she saw that her husband Shiva and herself were insulted while all the other gods were respected, she was heartbroken. In her grief, she jumped into the sacrificial fire, declaring, “In my next life, I will marry Shiva again. I will burn myself in this fire to make your yajna fail due to the insult done to me and my husband.”
When Shiva learned of Sati’s death, his anger knew no bounds. He sent his army to destroy Daksha’s yajna. In the process, the gods feared that Shiva’s rage might destroy everything, so they prayed to him to calm down. Daksha also apologized, and Shiva blessed him. However, upon seeing Sati’s charred body, Shiva’s grief overwhelmed him, and he carried her body across the sky. Wherever parts of her body fell, they became Shakti Peeths.
Nainital is the place where Sati’s eyes fell. In her memory, the Naina Devi Temple was established. The Naini Lake, which is said to have formed from the tears of Sati, symbolizes her lost eyes.
