Pichora | Garhwali Pichora | Kumaoni Pichora | Pahadi Pichora

Uttarakhand is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, with the Pichora being a standout traditional outfit for women, particularly in the Kumaon region. Resembling a dupatta, the Pichora is often a vibrant yellowish-orange, adorned with red, brown, or maroon polka dots. Its bright colors give it the nickname Rangwali Pichora or Rangoli Pichoda.

At the center of the Pichora, a Swastik symbol is intricately drawn, with the four quadrants featuring depictions of the Sun, Shankh (Conch Shell), a Bell with Om, and various Goddesses. The Swastik is often embellished with geometric shapes, leaves, and flowers, surrounded by delicate small dots. Large circles or dots are printed across the fabric, bordered beautifully, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship involved.

The Pichora serves as a trademark of Uttarakhand’s cultural identity, symbolizing tradition and joy. Variants of the Pichora exist between the Garhwali and Kumaoni styles, each reflecting the distinct heritage of its region. The Kumaoni Pichora, in particular, carries a legacy of bringing joy and smiles to women who adorn themselves with it during ceremonies and celebrations, making it a cherished aspect of Uttarakhand’s cultural attire.
