Bhalu Dam
A Hidden Gem of Uttarakhand
Located in the scenic hills of Uttarakhand, Bhalu Dam is an artificial lake developed by British rulers in 1903. This dam has been the primary source of water supply for Chaubatia and Ranikhet and is surrounded by dense forests of banj, buransh, and deodar. Bhalu Dam holds immense potential for tourism development, and its natural beauty attracts visitors.
Historical Background
Bhalu Dam was constructed by the British Viceroy and is known for its rare semi-circular structure, which still stands today. The surrounding area was initially developed as a picnic spot. However, no significant steps have been taken to preserve it as a heritage site to date.
Tourism Potential
Activities such as fishing, photography, and videography at Bhalu Dam could become major attractions for tourists. The dam also features a 500-meter-long and 50-meter-wide deodar forest, known as ‘Devvani.’ This location not only boasts natural beauty but also offers opportunities for trekking in its dense woods.
How to Reach
To reach Bhalu Dam from Ranikhet, one must first travel to Chaubatia Garden, which is 10 kilometers away from Ranikhet. After that, a three-kilometer hike through dense forests is required. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the sight of evergreen trees like deodar, chir, buransh, and banj.
Future Plans
The Cantonment Council has proposed to develop the area around Bhalu Dam as a tourist spot, which could be highly beneficial for tourism. As soon as the proposal is approved, efforts for its development will be initiated.
Bhalu Dam has the potential to become a new landmark in Uttarakhand’s mountainous tourism, offering travelers a chance to experience natural beauty and tranquility.
