Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple

Tarkeshwar Mahadev (Tadkeshwar Mandir)

A Sacred Destination in Dehradun

Tarkeshwar Mahadev, also known as Tadkeshwar, is a renowned temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located 36 kilometers from Lansdowne in Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of 1,800 meters, the temple is surrounded by dense forests of cedar and pine, making it an ideal site for natural beauty. Special worship and rituals are held here, especially during Shivaratri, making it an important pilgrimage destination.

Essence of the Legend

The legend of Tarkeshwar Mahadev tells the story of Tarakasura, an evil demon who undertook severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the boon of immortality, but with one condition: he would remain immortal except for Shiva’s son. After receiving this boon, Tarakasura began to slay sages and harass the gods.

In response to the pleas of the sages, Lord Shiva married Parvati, and from their union, Kartikeya was born. Kartikeya ultimately killed Tarakasura, but at the moment of his death, Tarakasura sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva. Accepting his prayer, Lord Shiva connected his name with the place where Tarakasura once meditated. Thus, the place came to be known as Tarkeshwar Mahadev.

Features of the Temple

The Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva. Initially, a Shiva Linga was present here, but now an idol of Lord Shiva in a dancing posture is worshipped. The Shiva Linga is placed beneath the idol of the deity. Adjacent to the main temple is another temple dedicated to Goddess Shakti.

An interesting legend surrounding the temple states that Goddess Parvati transformed herself into seven cedar trees to provide shade for Lord Shiva. These cedar trees are found in the region and are said to resemble the shape of the Om symbol.
