The Seven Brothers Test
A Story of Love and Unity
Rajvir Negi, a farmer with seven sons, exemplified unity and love, while Veeru Rawat’s three sons often fought. Veeru advised his sons to learn from Rajvir’s family. A drought forced Rajvir’s sons to find city jobs, which they shared equally. Impressed, Sage Narada told the gods about their bond. Lord Indra tested the brothers with gold coins and later with a single sesame seed. Each time, they chose unity over wealth. Indra blessed them, ensuring their story of brotherhood would be remembered for generations.
In a village, there was a farmer named Rajvir Negi. He had seven sons, and all of them shared a deep bond of love. In the same village, there was another farmer named Veeru Rawat who had three sons. Unlike Rajvir’s sons, Veeru’s sons were always fighting over small issues. Despite Veeru’s repeated attempts to explain that it was wrong for brothers to fight amongst themselves, his words had no effect on them.
One day, Veeru said to his sons, “Look! In this very village, Rajvir Negi’s seven sons live together in harmony and never fight with each other. You should learn from them.”
Hearing this, Veeru’s sons felt ashamed, and they decided to stop fighting.
Once, a severe drought hit the village, and no crops grew in the fields. Rajvir’s seven sons decided to go to the city to find jobs. Whatever they earned, they shared equally among themselves and lived happily.
One day, Sage Narada was wandering on Earth and heard about the love and unity among Rajvir’s seven sons. He later went to heaven and mentioned this to the gods. At that time, the gods were embroiled in disagreements and had stopped talking to each other.

Narada told the gods, “You, being divine, are still quarreling amongst yourselves, while on Earth, Rajvir Negi’s seven sons never fight. You should learn from them.”
Hearing this, Lord Indra said, “We shall test these seven brothers.”
Indra disguised himself as a holy man and went to Rajvir’s house. He first approached the eldest son and offered him a hundred gold coins, saying, “Take these coins. With this wealth, your life will be comfortable, but there is one condition.”
“What condition?” the eldest son asked.
“Do not share these coins with any of your brothers,” Indra replied.
The eldest son refused, saying, “I do not want gold that separates me from my brothers.”
Indra then went to each of the seven sons, but all of them returned the gold coins.
Indra went back to heaven but was still not fully satisfied. He decided to test the brothers once more.
Rajvir’s sesame crop was usually very good. That year, the sesame plants were full of flowers. When it was time to harvest, they threshed the plants, but to their surprise, there were no seeds inside the pods. After threshing and sorting, they found only a single sesame seed.
The seven brothers decided to share that single sesame seed among themselves.
Seeing this, Indra was overjoyed. He blessed the brothers, saying that their names and the story of their brotherhood would be remembered for generations. Even today, tales of the unity and love of these seven brothers are told in folk stories.
This story teaches us that true love, unity, and sacrifice are far more valuable than any wealth. It’s these virtues that form the foundation of a strong and happy family or community.
