The Milam Glacier is located in the Munsiyari tehsil of the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand, India. Situated about 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of the iconic Nanda Devi peak, this glacier is one of the most scenic and remote trekking destinations in the Kumaon region. The glacier spans an area of around 37 km² (14 sq miles) and has a length of approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles), with elevations ranging from about 5,500 meters (18,000 feet) to 3,870 meters (12,700 feet) at its snout.
Geography and Source
The Milam Glacier is situated on the south-facing slope of the main Himalayan range, and it originates from the eastern slope of Trishuli and the southern slope of its eastern subsidiary, Kohli. Several subsidiary glaciers flow into Milam Glacier, including those from peaks such as Hardeol, Mangraon, Deo Damla, and Sakram on the western rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. On the eastern side, glaciers from Nanda Gond and Nanda Pal feed into the Milam Glacier, creating a massive and awe-inspiring flow of ice.
The glacier is the source of the Goriganga River, and the village of Milam lies near the snout of the glacier. Munsiyari, situated further down the Goriganga valley, serves as the base for the trek to the glacier.
Historical Context
The Milam Glacier was closed for trekkers and visitors after 1962, due to security concerns. However, it was reopened for trekking in 1994, and since then, it has gained popularity among trekking enthusiasts for its challenging routes and breathtaking Himalayan views. It’s considered one of the most accessible glaciers in the Kumaon region.
Trekking Season and Timing
The best time to visit the Milam Glacier is from mid-March to May, before the monsoon season begins. The monsoon months (June to September) bring heavy rainfall, landslides, and roadblocks, making the trekking conditions difficult and hazardous.
