Manila Devi Temple
A Spiritual Retreat in Uttarakhand
The Manila Devi Temple is located in the Shalt region of Almora district, dedicated to the family goddess of the Kutyuri dynasty and the Kutyuri people, Mother Manila Devi. This temple is spread between Talla Manila, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, and Malla Manila, located at about 1,950 meters. The shrine at Malla Manila is a sacred site where one can enjoy stunning views of the Shivalik and Greater Himalayas. If the weather is clear, one can witness breathtaking vistas of the Elephant’s Forehead (Hathi Matha) up to Panchchuli and Trishul mountains.
History
The temple’s history is ancient, linked to the year 1488 when King Bhram Dev ruled the Pali Pachayu area of Almora. At that time, the Chandravanshi king Kirti Chand sought to conquer Kumaon. To protect his subjects, King Bhram Dev made a treaty with King Chand and built a temple in Manila forest in 1488, establishing the worship of Mother Manila Devi.
Temple Structure and Layout
The Manila Devi Temple is divided into two parts: Malla Manila (Upper Manila) and Talla Manila (Lower Manila). The ancient temple is located in Talla Manila. The temple at Malla Manila is famous due to a story that is well-known among the locals.
The Legend
Once, a few thieves attempted to steal the idol of the eight-metal (ashtadhatu) statue of the goddess. When they tried to lift the entire statue, they couldn’t. They managed to break off one of the goddess’s hands and attempted to take it with them. However, when they tried to lift the hand to continue their escape, they found they could not. Eventually, they left that piece behind and fled. This incident adds to the temple’s significance.
