Heritage of The Kathait Rajput or Kathait Caste

Kathait surname is a prominent Pahari Rajput name, widely found in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Kathaits trace their lineage back to the Katoch Rajput clan of the Chandravanshi (Lunar) dynasty, known historically as the rulers of the ancient Trigarta Kingdom. The Katoch dynasty’s legacy dates back to 4300 B.C., with an unbroken lineage. One of its most legendary figures was Raja Porus, or Parmanand Chandra, who famously fought against Alexander the Great.

Historically, Kathait’s migrated from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh to Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Relations between the rulers of Kangra and Garhwal were strong, especially as a queen of Garhwal hailed from the Katoch clan. Due to these ties, Kathaits were appointed by the Tehri king to prestigious roles such as Chief Faujdars and Thokdars—high-ranking military and administrative titles.

The name “Kathait” is believed to be derived from “Katoch,” where “Kat” signifies “army,” and “Uch” or “thait” implies “upper caste” or noble status. This rich history and association with the Katoch Rajputs underscores the Kathait family’s esteemed heritage in the region.
