Jaspal Rana

Padma Shri Jaspal Rana is an Indian shooter. He contested mainly in the 25 m Centre Fire Pistol category. He was a gold medallist at the 1994 Asian Games, 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Jaspal Rana is an Indian Shooter and shooting coach. He is well known for winning the Gold medal at the 1994 Asian Games, 1998 Commonwealth Games – Men’s Center Fire Pistol, Men’s Center Fire Pistol Pairs, 2002, commonwealth games – Men’s 25m center fire Pistol and 2006, Asian Games and several other medals at different events.

His mentor/ coach is his father Narayan Singh Rana.

EARLY LIFE

Jaspal Rana was born on 28 June 1976, in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Jaspal’s father’s name is Narayan Singh, and his mother’s name is Shyama Rana. His father was an Indo – Tibetan border police officer, he has a brother and sister both are renowned shooters, he belongs to a Rajput family.

Jaspal Rana completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya school, air force station tigri camp Tughlakabad, New Delhi. At the age of 12, Jaspal Rana made his national debut by winning a silver at the 31st National Shooting Championship in Ahemdabad in 1988.

Career

Jaspal Rana started his Shooting career at a very early age, he was around ten years old when his father introduced him to the sport of shooting, his father was an ITBP officer he was surrounded by forces and guns and he got interested in the sport his father was his first coach. Jaspal Rana made his first accomplishment at the age of 12, winning his National debut winning a silver medal at the National Shooting Championship held at Ahemdabad in 1988, he grabbed his first international glory at the 46th World Shooting Championship with a world record score in Milan, Italy in the year 1994.

At the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, he made the world in 25m Fire Pistol with 590 points, he also won several medals which include, Gold medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, and the 2002, Commonwealth games. It was announced that Jaspal Rana would receive the Best Sportsperson Award at the Asian Games but instead, Korea’s Park Tae received the honor. Rana took this incident very gracefully and ignore the all controversy.

Political Career

Shortly after the Asian Games, Jaspal Rana joined the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in 2006, in 2009, he contested in Lok Sabha elections from Tehri district but he lost to a congress candidate later in 2012, he left the BJP and joined the Indian National
Congress (INC) in 2012, he is an active member of the party and works in Dehradun.

Marriage

Jaspal Rana Got married to Reena Rana she is an environmentalist, interior designer, and national-level shooter in pistol and shotgun, and together they have two Children Yuvraj Rana and Devanshi Rana, Devanshi Rana followed her father’s footsteps and became a shooter for the Indian shooting team.

Awards

In 1994, he was awarded the Arjuna Award, the second-highest award for achievement in sport by the Indian Government at an age of eighteen When he was twenty-one he was awarded Padma Shri and in between, he was awarded the National citizen award by Mother Teresa and Dronacharya award in 2020.
