A long time ago, the demon kings Shumbha and Nishumbha captured the celestial kingdom of Indra, the king of the gods, and cast the gods out of Swarga (heaven). Distressed by this upheaval, the gods performed intense prayers to seek deliverance. In response to their prayers, a goddess emerged from Parvati. This goddess, known for her exceptional beauty, caught the eye of Shumbha, who desired to marry her.
When Parvati refused Shumbha’s advances, he sent his demon chiefs, Chanda and Munda, to kill her. However, they were defeated by Goddess Chamunda, who manifested from Chandika’s anger. Despite these setbacks, Shumbha and Nishumbha attempted to kill Chandika but were ultimately slain by her.
After this divine victory, Chandika is said to have rested briefly atop Neel Parvat. To commemorate this legend, a temple was later established at this location. Additionally, the two peaks of the mountain range are named Shumbha and Nishumbha, further linking the geography to the mythological tale.
